Overview
De Quervain tenosynovitis is inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist.

Causes and risk factors
Repetitive thumb or wrist movement, childcare activities, and direct injury can contribute.

Symptoms
Pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, worse with gripping or pinching.

Diagnosis
Physical exam including the Finkelstein test.

Treatment
Thumb spica splint, activity modification, NSAIDs, corticosteroid injection, and rarely surgical release.

When to seek care
Persistent thumb‑side wrist pain that limits daily activities should be evaluated.
