Overview
Achilles tendinopathy is overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, causing pain and stiffness at the back of the heel.

Causes and risk factors
Sudden increases in activity, poor footwear, and tight calf muscles are common contributors.

Symptoms
Pain and stiffness with activity, tenderness along the tendon, and possible swelling.

Diagnosis
Clinical exam; ultrasound or MRI if needed.

Treatment
Eccentric strengthening exercises, activity modification, NSAIDs, and physical therapy. Rupture requires urgent evaluation.

When to seek care
Severe pain, a “pop,” or inability to push off should be evaluated urgently.
